Sustainability
Our Sustainable Mining Plan
Being a leader in sustainability is part of who we are. It sets us apart in our industry and enables us to live up to our purpose — to re-imagine mining to improve people's lives.
Our strategy
Three pillars, measurable targets
Trusted corporate leader
Transparent reporting, ethical conduct and a fully traceable supply chain. We disclose our tax, royalty and community spend by operation every year.
- 100% of operations audited annually
- Zero tolerance for corruption
- Full mine-to-market traceability
Healthy environment
Carbon-neutral operations by 2040, a 50% cut in freshwater withdrawal, and progressive rehabilitation of every hectare we disturb.
- Carbon neutral by 2040
- 50% less freshwater by 2030
- Net positive biodiversity impact
Thriving communities
Five jobs off-site for every job on-site, backed by enterprise development, schooling and clinics in our host municipalities.
- 5 off-site jobs per on-site job
- R1.2bn enterprise development fund
- 12 host-community clinics

Safety and health
Zero harm is the only acceptable target
South African mining remains among the most technically demanding in the world. Our response is to remove people from hazardous positions wherever mechanisation allows, to invest in real-time proximity detection and seismic monitoring, and to give every employee unconditional authority to stop unsafe work.
Occupational health is treated with equal seriousness. Dust suppression, hearing conservation and on-site primary healthcare — including HIV and TB programmes open to employees' families — are funded centrally, not from operational budgets.
