Smart Mining
The step-change innovations transforming the nature of mining
Technology, digitalisation and sustainability working hand in hand — connecting the metals and minerals of South Africa to everyone who needs and values them.
Innovation
Six programmes reshaping how we mine
Precision orebody knowledge
Machine-learning models trained on five decades of drill data let us target grade with far less waste rock, cutting energy and emissions per ounce.
Waterless processing
Coarse particle recovery and dry stack tailings reduce freshwater draw in the water-scarce Northern Cape and remove the risk of wet tailings dams.
Autonomous haulage
Twenty-four autonomous trucks at Postmasburg South operate on a dedicated bench, improving safety and lifting fleet utilisation by 19%.
Renewable power
A 240MW solar and wind cluster wheeled onto the national grid will supply about 38% of our South African electricity demand by 2028.
Digital twin operations
Every shaft and plant is mirrored in a live digital twin at our Johannesburg integrated operations centre, enabling predictive maintenance.
Hydrogen haulage pilot
A hydrogen fuel-cell haul truck fleet is under trial at Kathu Ridge, powered by electrolysers running on our own renewable capacity.
Our ambition
A mine with a fundamentally smaller footprint
Our long-term goal is a South African mine that uses no freshwater, produces no waste rock at surface, and draws its energy entirely from renewable sources — while delivering higher recoveries than any operation running today.
Getting there requires partnership. We work with South African universities, local equipment manufacturers and technology start-ups through the Goldvista Innovation Programme, which co-funds pilots at our operations and licenses successful technologies back to the wider industry.
